Valladolid may be small, but its food scene has more character than we expected. Traditional Maya cooking, Yucatecan craft beer, tropical gelato and some surprisingly good vegetarian restaurants all sit within walking distance of the colourful historic centre. We only had a handful of places we really wanted to recommend, but each of them brought something completely different to our stay.
Best Places to Eat & Drink in Valladolid
IX CAT IK
IX CAT IK is the place we’d recommend first if you want to understand a little more about traditional Maya cuisine. The restaurant focuses on regional cooking techniques and dishes such as chaya tamales, poc chuc and pibil, but what made our visit especially memorable was how much the team shared about the ingredients and preparation methods. It felt much more like an introduction to Maya food culture than just another restaurant dinner.
Wabi Gelato
Wabi Gelato is not just another ice cream stop. This small Valladolid gelateria makes its gelato and sorbet locally, combining Mediterranean inspiration with flavours from Yucatán and beyond. Their selection changes regularly and can include more unusual combinations alongside tropical fruit flavours.
El Ela Maya
El Ela Maya is a fully vegan restaurant with a strong Middle Eastern influence, using organic and locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. We loved having something completely different after several days of Mexican food, especially their halva-inspired desserts and coffee. The focus on plant-based cooking and produce from the Maya region makes it feel more considered than your average vegan café.
Idilio
Idilio combines two things that work very well together: Yucatecan craft beer and Mexican food. The restaurant specialises in beers from the region and serves them alongside tacos and other dishes in a large green garden on Calzada de los Frailes. There is also a small museum at the entrance dedicated to local history and culture. We mainly remember it as a very easy place to spend an evening with good food, beer and live music.
Le Kaat
Le Kaat is one of Valladolid’s strongest options for vegetarian and vegan food. The menu goes well beyond salads, with plant-based versions of Mexican classics alongside dishes influenced by Middle Eastern and Asian cuisine. We loved the garden setting, and today the concept also includes a small shop with local ceramics and handmade pieces. A particularly useful address if you want proper vegetarian food without feeling like you’re compromising on the experience.
