Madeira is one of those destinations that completely surprised us. Famous for its dramatic cliffs, lush mountains and spectacular hiking trails, the island is also home to a surprisingly exciting food scene. From specialty coffee and relaxed lunch spots to restaurants celebrating local ingredients and fresh Atlantic seafood, these are the places we’ve personally visited and genuinely recommend for your trip to Madeira.
Best Places to Eat & Drink in Madeira
Terra Food Concept
A relaxed dinner spot where everyone will find something they love. The menu of Terra Food Concept combines Mediterranean flavours with international influences, from fresh ceviche to tahini aubergine. And whatever you do, don’t skip the chocolate mousse. On warm evenings, the covered terrace is the perfect place to linger a little longer.
Akua
Led by renowned Madeiran chef Júlio Pereira, Akua in Funchal celebrates the island through beautifully prepared seafood and local ingredients. The dishes are creative without being overcomplicated, and the Madeira banana dessert with curry and pink pepper is one you’ll remember long after your trip.
Peixaria no Mercado
Located right next to Funchal’s famous market, Peixaria no Mercado is one of the best places to experience Madeira’s seafood. Whether you choose beautifully fresh grilled fish or their delicious tartare on toast, the quality of the ingredients speaks for itself.
Fala Fala
Hidden away in a cosy courtyard, Fala Fala serves delicious falafel wraps. Their homemade falafel, fresh local ingredients and creative flavour combinations make this the perfect spot for a relaxed lunch in Funchal.
Veganaria
Don’t let the name fool you – this place is worth visiting whether you’re vegan or not. Everything is made from scratch, from generously filled sandwiches to one of the best cheesecakes we had on the island. Veganaria is run by such a lovely couple, and what they pull of here is so amazing! No wonder they already won several Taste Awards. Simple, fresh and incredibly satisfying.
Motya Café
A cosy café known for its excellent coffee, homemade mochi and carefully brewed filter coffees. Whether you’re after breakfast, matcha or a perfectly made flat white, Motya is a lovely place to slow down for a while.
Studio Coffee
One of our favourite coffee spots in Funchal. Studio Coffee serves excellent specialty coffee alongside fresh brunch dishes in a bright, modern space. They also roast their own beans, making this the perfect place to start your day before exploring the island.
