The Douro Valley route
Would you believe the Douro Valley is the oldest acknowledged wine region in the world? We’ve made such a fun Douro Valley trip!
Besides ofcourse Port wines, this region also produces mainly red and some white wines. You can book several tours to visit the valley, but riding through it yourself is soooo much more fun! And a nice change from the touristy and quite commercial port estates in the center of Porto (which we didn’t like so much..). We do really recommend the lodge of @grahams_port though, a short walk up the hill in Porto. Such a nice view on Porto and more personal attention!
Now, the Douro valley. Be sure to set aside a full day for it, the whole trip is about 300 kilometres and it’s nice to make a stop wherever you want. We started our trip in the South of Porto, on the road N222. We drove all the way to Godim, from where the wine route begins. It continues on the road N222 and we turned around at the little Place ‘Pinhão’.

Douro Valley Wineries
Besides the breathtaking views (is this even Europe?), we made a selection of nice estates and places to go for a taste!
⋆ Our first stop on the famous route #n222 was @quintadopopa. The view on the Douro river from up here is insane! We had a nice tasting as well (a ‘wine flight’) of three different wines.
⋆ @sandemanporto (and also @qseixo) is a big and more modern estate with a separate tasting area, where you can walk through the grapes to get there.
⋆ @quintadobomfim offers wines from different estates to taste and has a nice sunny view on the #pontedopinhão. For us this was also the turning point of this trip (you can drive further if you want).
⋆ @quintadelarosa is a nice estate that also has a little restaurant where we saw delicious pizzas coming out of the wood-fired oven.
