Our journey started in Cape Town and brought us all the way to Addo Elephant Park and back. On the way we came across several places and drove the beautiful route 62. In this article we’ll take you through all the best foodspots we’ve found on our way so you have a delicious stop in every place. Not every place on the garden route is that culinary, so we’re very happy with the spots we’ve found and think you’ll have a unique list to guide you.
Swellendam is a small place along the garden route and a logical stop during this road trip. Although it is a characteristic village with history and beautiful sites, Ed didn’t find any highlights regarding food at first.
Until he found @la_sosta_swellendam. This place totally turned our experience in Swellendam into one of most special we’ve had in South-Africa. The restaurant is very romantic and the whole place just feels so peaceful. It is run by an Italian and South African chef couple and it’s combined with a lovely hotel. We’ve had an amazing stay and could walk up to our room right after dinner!
The Italian inspired menu offers uncomplicated and honest dishes. It could easily compete with the fancy restaurants you’ll find in Cape Town. From the gnocchi to the affogato – everything was heaven. But the fact that this is a more hidden spot makes this experience so special and unique. Definitely the best food in Swellendam. We couldn’t recommend it enough – both for dinner and accommodation.

Muizenberg
Hang Ten Cafe
Absolutely go for breakfast or lunch at surf hangout @hangtencafe_muizenberg. Known for their healthy savoury crepes and salads, but also making delicious (vegan) sweets. This is the only spot at the beachfront overlooking the sea and famous colorful beach huts!
Wilderness
Hallo Coffee
On your way to viewpoint #mapofafrica but definitely a destination on its own; @hallocoffee.sa. Overlooking the beautiful nature of Wilderness, enjoying a very good coffee. Even the toilet had a nice view!
Hermanus
Mikro Coffee
The best spot for a coffee stop in #hermanus (the place to spot whales in South Africa) is @mikrocoffeeco. They’re roasting coffee beans themselves and you can really feel the passion for coffee (and people) at this place. Lovely vibe!

The Foodbarn
For the best dinner in Noordhoek we recommend The Foodbarn! This neighbourhood restaurant serves all kinds of shared dining dishes and has more than enough vegetarian options. We felt like this was the only place in Noordhoek to really ‘dine out’ and spend your evening. Definitely the best food in Noordhoek, and they also have a deli shop!
The Coffee Guy
For good coffee we recommend The Coffee Guy. They roast their own coffee beans and served a very good flat white!
Kirsten’s Kick Ass ice cream
Sit back and relax on the grass at ice cream shop @kristenskickassicecream. It’s rare to find a good quality ice cream shop like this in a small town like Noordhoek. The square and playground around it has a slightly Dutch feel to it, which we found very charming.
